Although there is no definitive description of a Portable Appliance, the consensus of opinion generally describes these as “any electrical item which can or is intended to be moved whilst connected to an electrical supply” (quote from the National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers).

Portable Appliance Equipment:

The following are examples of Portable Appliances:

  • Portable Appliance: weighing less than 18kg and used whilst moving or can be moved from one place to another (e.g. vacuum cleaner, food processor, kettle, toaster etc)
  • Movable (transportable) equipment: weighing less that 18kg and not fixed, on wheels or castors that can be moved to perform its use (e.g. air purifier/dehumidifier, electric fire).
  • Handheld: Portable appliances that are handheld whilst in use (e.g. hairdryer).
  • Fixed: Equipment or appliances that are fixed into position or secured in a specific location (e.g. bathroom heater)
  • Stationary equipment: weighing more than 18kg and not intended to be moved often (e.g. electric cooker (not built in), fridge freezer).
  •  Built-in equipment: appliances or equipment installed in a particular recess or location (such as a cupboard or within units). Usually not all the sides of this type of equipment can be seen (e.g. built-in dishwasher).
